Perception of Light and Shadow
Perception of Light and Shadow
This skill is very important because it allows an
artist to make objects and space look three-dimensional with the use of “shading.”
Value is understood as darkness and brightness, and it is key to observe the
differences in tones of light and dark within whatever space you are drawing. Pale,
light tones are said to be “high” in value and dark tones are “low” in value.
Value, Light, and Shadow
The conversion from color to a different shade of gray is called value, therefore, every
color has value. Both shadow and value are sued by designers to act as the basis for making any rendering look realistic. Without these values, a drawing has no depth or basic three-dimensional form. The objects would appear flat and uninteresting.
A highlight is known as the brightest light and
appears where light form the source falls most directly on the object. A cast
shadow is when an object blocks light rays and creates the darkest shadow. On
the other hand, a crest shadow is any shadow on the crest of a rounded form,
typically between the highlight and reflected light. These are very difficult to
distinguish, but it is the key to round out the object in a three-dimensional
form. Reflect light, as briefly mentioned, is when light is reflected back onto
the object from the surface around the object. The surfaces of an object that
do not receive direct light rays are in shade. Typically, a reflected light is
on a shaded surface.
Creating Contrast on an Object
Contrast on an object is very important in showing
the sense of depth and three-dimensional form. Contrast means to show different
values on two surfaces using values not close on the value bar. A strong
contrast means that two values are further apart on the value bar, whereas
soft contrast means that two values are closer together on the value bar. If
there is not contrast of value in a drawing, then the space and/or object looks
flat and lacks a sense of three-dimensional form and depth.

I loved how you laid out your blog! it was easy to read and understand. I also loved that you gave pictures to help me understand what you were saying
ReplyDeleteExcellent Blog. Your layout is well done. Your thoughts are illustrated well with appropriate images. You do need to post your Sketch for the week. Total Points 45/50
ReplyDeleteAgain, I appreciate how you set up your blog, it is both aesthetic and easy to read. Also, I liked how you put a picture to help with understanding of shadows and then also proceeded to describe the picture
